If you are a chocolate connoisseur you do know what you are going to get. You may not love every piece but…
If you’re not a chocolate connoisseur, you need to get busy and decide to be one. Or roll with me on the following analogies.
Have you ever seen a Whitman Sampler with assorted chocolates?
It’s a great metaphor for my life.
Solid chocolate, MMMMM – Steady. I know exactly what I am going to get. This is when life is just going along, I’m enjoying it, it is good and predictable. I know there will not be any surprises in the middle of all that steadiness.
Chocolate filled with caramel – Confession time – when I open a box of chocolates this is my first choice, but I can only have so many because of how sweet they are. Life is like this, good and then bam, soooo sweet, so amazing, so yummy BUT to appreciate those times, I need to have steady times. I need to be steady. I need to stay steady. Have you noticed how many of these are actually in an assorted box? You connoisseurs know – just enough to keep me looking for the next oh so sweet moment.
Chocolate with nuts – steady BUT different. Let’s just say nuts are the right and left turns I take on occasion – not good or bad just different.
Chocolate with mint – yeah that York Peppermint Patty sensation – guess what? It’s the Holy Spirit blowing in and through my life. It is pretty unexpected and yet I know it’s there.
Chocolate with coconut – mostly good and then the coconut gets stuck in my teeth. Just like life – mostly good with some junk that’s gets stuck. Stuck in my heart, in my head, you get the picture.
And finally those fruit filled ones – yuck. The outside is that steady, predictable chocolate I love and then it happens – in just a moment – something bad. Something I didn’t plan for. Something I could not have predicted or worse, something I knew was going to erupt but I choose to keep pretending I was never going to reach in and grab one of those. Unfortunately even one is too many and most boxes of chocolate – just like life – have way more than one. Since they all pretty much look the same on the outside, it can be difficult to tell what’s underneath that first layer of chocolate.
I have a technique for avoiding the fruit filled ones. I use a knife and cut them open. Cut them open? What does that mean? It means I’m equipped, I have decided to set my mind on steady & keep it set. I put on God’s armor. I store his word in my heart. I trust. I pray. I decide. I act.
I pop a fruit one in every now and then anyway. Sometimes it happens unbeknownst to me, like when I just step in it! Sometimes it happens because I make a choice I know I shouldn’t. Either way, we can’t always avoid problems. Sometimes we create them, sometimes not. It’s how we act in the problem that matters most.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
Whether I brought it on myself or not, God still loves me. He will take my mess and turn it into a masterpiece or at the very least something not quite as messy.
I really, really, really enjoy chocolate. Even with the coconut & the yucky fruit filling.
I really, really, really enjoy life. Even with the junk that gets stuck and the problems that occur.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10
Thank you for chocolate.
