We cannot get or find our worth in anyone or anything except Jesus.  Jobs will be lost or end or change. Cars will rust, stuff breaks. Boyfriends/girlfriends will break-up. Spouses will leave or die.  People will most definitely disappoint.  If our identity and worth are in these things we are in big trouble.
This is part of a conversation I had with a very close friend several months ago.
It feels so great when people applaud you either literally or figuratively.  It is very easy to feed on accolades. To fill up on them.  To tie our value to them.  To leave Jesus out of the equation.
It feels so NOT great when people lash out at you, when they let you down, when they don’t give you the benefit of the doubt, when _____(you know)…
All of the sudden we are feeding on the toxic. We are filling up on the world.  Letting it roll around in our souls.
“Danger Will Robinson, danger!”
Neither is meant to be our lifeblood, neither is meant to sustain.
Jesus is.  The End.
Romans 12:2 (MSG)
2 Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
The band I’m in has been working on a new song.
The original is “Empty Me” by Chris Sligh.
We kept the words but the made the groove our very own.
The jist of it is when we are full of us there is no room for Him.  So it’s really a prayer about being emptied of all our junk – pride, hurt, any foolish thing our heart holds to – and to be filled with Jesus.
Funny thing is when we are so full of us it seems difficult to make room for Him.  But I promise when you do, and by the way it is deliberate, it is a daily decision, it is so worth it!  Life is sweeter because you know what’s important.  Life is sweeter because you are so loved. You know all the power you have as a child of God – power to love, power to forgive, power to decide to control your feelings – not let feelings control you.  Power to be salt and light.  Power to receive mercy and grace, unfailing and unconditional.
Dear God, help me. Amen.
P.S. I know I can do all things through you who give me strength so show me how to let you in and how to keep my heart set on you and only you. Amen, amen.
So what’s the less of me 1,2,3?
#1 Let nothing replace Christ
#2 See number one
#3 Trust. Seek. Pray
Notice I did not say this would be easy, it won’t.
Keep seeking God for all you need.
Romans 15:13 (AMP)
13 May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope.
