Bitter SUCKS!

life on purpose, pure grace, faith, hope, love, grace, change, bitter

“When you choose Better over bitter, you become a fierce woman of faith – battered but NOT broken, afflicted NOT crushed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8 – Suzanne Eller
Better over bitter.
Truth be told, we all have this choice to make many times every day.
I do.
Just the other day someone’s words, written words, really hurt me.
Funny thing is, okay really not so funny, more like the ironic thing is they were responding to my words, which they felt were hurtful.  Ugh.
Just so you know my words were NEVER intended to be hurtful.
And even now, from the outside looking in, I would guess 90% of folks wouldn’t think twice about what I wrote.
Still I’m not one of those people who purposefully hurt others. I really, really seek to be a leave people and things better than you found them kinda girl.
Better over bitter.
For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]. – Philippians 4:8 (AMP)
Whatever is Better.
Better over bitter.
I must remember, we must remember, when writing words, intention can be subjective.
The reader could be feeling vulnerable or sad or angry and take the words in a completely different context than the writer intended.
Give people the benefit of the doubt whether you are the writer or the reader.  Be a peacemaker. Choose better.
Get over yourself.  Most people are not intentionally trying to hurt you and if you do have those people in your life change that right now. Again, it doesn’t matter if you were the writer or the reader – have a little or a lot of grace for others. Choose better.
Now, where was I?
I went through my normal gamut of ugh, anger, disbelief and truly hurt feelings in a matter of 5 minutes. You know what I’m talking about – right? I was reaching for better BUT bitter was hanging out in my heart.
But no weapon that can hurt you has ever been forged. Any accuser who takes you to court will be dismissed as a liar. This is what GOD’s servants can expect. I’ll see to it that everything works out for the best. GOD’s Decree. – Isaiah 54:17 (MSG)
No weapon, not even the weapon of another’s words.
I talked the situation over with my husband – he wasn’t 100% on my side – sheesh!  We always want confirmation that our righteous indignation is founded no matter what. We are, after all, works in progress.
I prayed about it – prayed that I would let it go and chalk it up to a misunderstanding. Prayed the other person would really know my heart and my intention.  Prayed for them to be blessed and let God carry their burdens. Better, much better.
I apologized – this can be difficult period but especially when you don’t feel like you did anything wrong. This is the perfect time to remind you – LOVE is not a feeling, it is an action.  In this case the action of taking the blame for Loves sake.
Better over bitter.
Finally I moved on.  People are broken, some a little, some a lot.
Better over bitter.
I specifically learned to be very clear in my intention when writing to this person.
How much better it is to get skillful and godly Wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. – Proverbs 16:16 (AMP)
Learn from your misunderstandings. Better.
I don’t know what your current Better over bitter situation is.  I do know Better is better.
TRUST in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding – Because your understanding is iffy – In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight. He will remind you to love, to choose better.  – Proverbs 3:5-6
SEEK the Lord and His strength, yearn for and seek His face and to be in His presence continually – when you seek God first you get over yourself pretty darn quick. – 1 Chronicles 16:11
PRAY without ceasing. Need I say more? – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
DECIDE We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God—those whom he has called according to his plan. This we know, so decide better over bitter – Romans 8:28
ACT  Little children, let us not love [merely] in theory or in speech but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity). Act better – 1 John 3:18
What’s your 1,2,3 and 4?
